EBSA Thursday - WHO LBM4 – Biorisk management beyond risk groups and biosafety levels
The WHO Laboratory Biosafety Manual (LBM) serves as a de facto global standard that presents best practices and sets trends in biosafety. The recent publication of the fourth edition expands the thorough, evidence-based and transparent assessment of the risks, allowing safety measures to be balanced with the actual risk of working with biological agents on a case-by-case basis.
A challenging shift from routines based on levels? An opportunity to allow optimizing risk management, in particular in less resourced envrionments? Join us and discuss with two of the LBM4 contributors, active EBSA members, providing their insights on the (r)evolution this version marks and how biosafety professionals can use it in their daily practice.

Symposium on emergency preparedness and response
Organized by the Belgian Biosafety Professionals (BBP) and the Dutch Association for Biosafety Officers (BVFp)
Erasmus University Rotterdam, Netherlands
Working with hazardous biological material or providing the necessary support to have people working safely with the hazardous material is our day-to-day job. For that, we are experienced in assessing the risk of contained use activities, to train our coworkers and to watch over a culture of biosafety.

BBP workshop "The biocide legislation and its impact on contained laboratories, greenhouses and animal facilities"
Geo-Instituut 200E, Celestijnenlaan 200e – Heverlee (Leuven)
Are you finding your way in the biocide legislation? Or are you struggling, as many colleagues, with questions like:
- Can I still use particular products (e.g. Virkon®) and, if so, for how long?
- If not, what are suitable alternative products?
- Do we need to change our decontamination procedures?
- What are the consequences of the biocide legislation on my organization?
We hope to offer clarity during the BBP workshop

EBSA13 Conference Ljubljana
The 13th EBSA Conference took place 21-23 June in Ljubljana, Slovenia. 218 delegates from 34 countries attended despite the fact that the conference had been postponed due to volcano ash. Seven pre-conference workshops were highly appreciated by 118 participants. Conference presentations on GMMs, ´green´ and sustainable laboratories and new approaches to regulatory frameworks on the national level were of particular interest. Apparently participants enjoyed networking and the social programme in the lovely city of Ljubljana.

EBSA12 Conference - Stockholm
The Stockholm Conference, EBSA 2009, came off successfully in June. A total of 290 participants from 29 countries in all continents came together in a cordial atmosphere. The scientific programme and pre-conference workshops were well recieved. Together with company exhibitions it was demonstrated that the EBSA Conference has developed into a major event for the European biosafety community. There was also time to enjoy the white nights and the rain eventually gave way to brilliant sunshine. The EBSA Conference Program Workgroup is now preparing the EBSA 2010 conference, which will be held in April 2010 in Ljubljana, Slovenia.
