Pre conference course H. Tips for the successful evidence-based decontamination of contained use laboratories using liquid and gaseous disinfectants

Instructors

Allan Bennett and Suzanne Loret

Course description

The application of appropriate decontamination methods is the key element in reducing surface contamination in the laboratory to prevent laboratory-acquired infections and cross contamination in the laboratory.

After reviewing the main sources of laboratory contamination, the course will focus on the properties and mode of action of disinfectants often used in laboratories. In addition to chemical disinfection of equipment and surfaces, the training will present gaseous decontamination options. Finally, part of this course will be devoted to the validation of decontamination approaches, as well as their possible dangers and limits.

Learning outcomes

  1. become aware of the risks of contamination in the contained use laboratory
  2. acquire the ability to select and effectively use the appropriate decontamination method, based on an accurate understanding of the mode of action of disinfectants
  3. understand basic principles of validation of chemical and gaseous decontaminations
  4. become aware of the potential dangers of disinfectants for the health of users and the environment
  5. become aware of the possible limits of chemical and gaseous decontamination
