About Recent developments in plant genetic engineering technology

Recent developments in plant genetic engineering technology

Instructors: René Custers and Jan Kooter

Course length (2:30): two 1-hour parts, with a 15-minute break between them and a final 15-minute discussion
The course will provide an up-to-date overview of the use of modern targeted genetic engineering technology in plants, focusing on the CRISPR/Cas system. It  provides an overview of the different methods used, the types of genetic and epigenetic modifications that can be achieved, their applications and consequences. The consequences will also be discussed in the GMO regulatory context and with regards to potential  risks and uncertainties. Main topics:
  • New genomic techniques: CRISPR/Cas
  • Methods of genome editing in plants
    • Delivery methods
    • Types of genetic alterations: mutations, insertions and deletions, base editing, single and multiple targets
  • CRISPR interference, RNA interference
  • CRISPR-mediated epigenetic modifications
  • Main applications of CRISPR technology in plants
  • Regulatory status of genome-edited organisms
  • Risks associated with genome editing (CRISPR) technology, uncertainties, off-targets
  • Environmental risks
