The IVI is Switzerland’s reference laboratory for the diagnosis, monitoring and research of highly infectious epizootic diseases, including viral zoonoses. The laboratories located in Bern and Mittelhäusern operate at the BSL2 and BSL-3Ag levels, respectively, and also incorporate BSL3 facilities. To ensure the protection of the environment and the employees, state of the art biosafety is of essential importance.

We are recruiting a Head of Biosafety with the following responsibilities:
  • Personal, technical and organizational management of biosafety
  • Responsible for biological, chemical, and transport safety, employee protection as well as processing reports and permits in accordance with the Containment Ordinance as well as Animal Disease Ordinance
  • Development and validation of safety-relevant processes and solutions in cooperation with the laboratory and technical department
  • Responsible for coordination with the Risk Management of the University of Bern
  • Represent the IVI in relevant national and international bodies
Suitable candidates will have the following profile:
  • University degree with a dissertation/PhD in a biomedical subject with a focus on virology/microbiology
  • Several years of professional experience in laboratory biosafety
  • Service-oriented and assertive personality with leadership experience
  • Strong analytical and conceptual thinking with an interest in technical systems
  • Communication in two official languages and English

The Institute of Virology and Immunology (IVI) is Switzerland’s reference laboratory for the diagnosis, monitoring and research of highly infectious epizootic diseases, including viral zoonoses (infectious diseases that are transmissible between animals and humans). The IVI is also responsible for the approval and monitoring of animal vaccines and immune sera for use in veterinary medicine. As part of a cooperation agreement with the Vetsuisse faculty of the University of Bern, the IVI is also responsible for teaching and research in the fields of virology and immunology.
