CEN Workshop Biosafety Professional Competence is open for public comment 17 November 2010 - 18 January 2011

 Flyer for download

CEN Workshop 53 Biosafety Professional (BSP) Competence aims to describe competences of a biosafety professional. It provides models for the role profile and tasks of a biosafety professional in an organization. It also provides model training specifications that help define individual competence.

For adequate laboratory biosafety and biosecurity the main pillars are a biosafety programme and the availability of a person - a "biosafety professional" with the appropriate skills to develop and manage such a programme. CWA 15793:2008 'Laboratory biorisk management' recognizes a key role for the biosafety professional in a laboratory biosafety and biosecurity management programme but defines the role in general terms. CEN WS 53 goes further by clearly describing competences of such a professional.

The CEN Workshop on BSP competence is the result of a series of workshops convened by the European Biosafety Association (EBSA) Biosafety Professional Task Group which culminated in the initial document used in the CEN CWA process. An international group of experts on BSP competence have met twice in plenary sessions and have participated in three rounds of written comments to further refine the original text. The result of this work is the document that is now available for public comment.

Make your opinion known!

This is an opportunity for all interested parties to influence the future status of the biosafety professional. The document will also assist organizations to identify and appoint individuals who are competent and help trainers to develop programs. The impact of these outcomes on the future of international biosafety and laboratory biosecurity is likely to be significant. Submit your comments now.
The document and a table for comment submission is available at
