How to get to Manchester

Air

Manchester is globally connected with an excellent transport infrastructure that includes Manchester Airport, just 20 minutes (10 miles/16km) from the city centre, serving 180 destinations with over 100 airlines, including a wide network throughout the UK.

Within 20 minutes of collecting your luggage, your can be in the heart of the city centre thanks to one of the airports six trains an hour to Manchester Piccadilly.

How to get to University of Manchester
The University of Manchester is located on the south side of Manchester city centre. The conference venue, University Place, is located on Oxford Road. Campus maps can be found at the following link http://www.manchester.ac.uk/aboutus/travel/


Rail

Manchester city centre has two major train stations: Piccadilly and Victoria, with secondary stations at Deansgate, Oxford Road and Salford Central. Piccadilly provides the main gateway to the rest of England, with direct trains to London every 30 minutes with journey times of just over two hours. There is a comprehensive network of rail and tram lines across the city.

How to get to University of Manchester
The University of Manchester is located close to both Piccadilly main line station (about two and a half hours from London) and Oxford Road train station, with Victoria train station a little further away.

 Piccadilly station to Oxford Road

The Oxford Road Link bus (no 147) runs from Piccadilly Rail Station across the campus stopping at 14 locations and finishing at Grafton Street. This service runs on weekdays between 7.15am and 6.45pm, at 10-minute intervals, and can be caught from the Fairfield Street entrance to Piccadilly Station.

A taxi from Piccadilly Station to the Oxford Road area of the campus will cost you about £5.

 Victoria station to Oxford Road

To get to the Oxford Road area of the campus, buses 191 and 197 run from Victoria station (from Corporation Street, outside the Co-operative Bank).

Oxford Road station to Oxford Road campus

To get to the Oxford Road area of the campus, go down the station approach to Oxford Road and turn right. The campus is a ten to fifteen minute walk. Alternatively, buses stop outside the Palace Hotel.


Metrolink (tram service)

Manchester Metrolink is the largest network of its kind in the UK. Trams run on street within the city centre, drastically cutting cross city journey times. The service provides an important link between the main rail stations of Piccadilly and Victoria. The cost of an average single journey is £2.90.

 Bus network

There are local bus services running throughout the Greater Manchester area, together with the Metrolink tram service.

 The Oxford Road Link (Bus Nr. 147) runs every ten minutes throughout the day, Monday to Friday between 7.15am and 6.51pm. The service starts at Bus Stop C on Fairfield Street, near Piccadilly Rail Station, and calls at:

• The University of Manchester (Sackville Street area)
• Manchester Metropolitan University
• The Royal Northern College of Music
• The Dental Hospital
• The University of Manchester (Oxford Road area)
• Manchester Royal Eye Hospital
• Saint Mary's Hospital
• A+E and Manchester Royal Infirmary

External services

External services to the Oxford Road area of the campus include:
• Buses from Piccadilly Bus Station: 14, 16, 41, 42, 43, 43a, 44, 45a, 48, 111, 140, 142, 157, 250.
• Buses from Oxford Road Station: All buses that run along Oxford Road.
• Buses from Cross Street outside Boots the Chemist: 47, 87, 50, 143, 197, 291.
• Buses from Manchester Airport: 43a, 45a.
• Bus from Piccadilly Train Station: 147.
• Tram: Alight at St Peter's Square and walk or catch a bus down Oxford Road

 Metroshuttle - free bus transportation

In addition, a free Metroshuttle (bus) service operates three circular routes around the city centre connecting the primary transport hubs with the city's main business and visitor destinations. (http://www.tfgm.com/buses/metroshuttle.cfm)

 A strategic road network links the city with its surrounding region, with the M60 orbital ring road providing quick and efficient access to all of the Greater Manchester boroughs and the wider motorway network serving other parts of the UK.
