Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention and the Sixth Review Conference of the Biological Weapons Conference, November-December 2006, Geneva.

EBSA's contribution:

EBSA was invited to attend a couple of days of the BTWC at the end of November. Ingegerd Kallings, representing EBSA, presented a lunchtime seminar titled "Enhancing Biosafety and Biosecurity - International Standard for Biorisk Management in Microbiological Containment Facilities." as a side activity at the BWC 6 th Review Conference, Geneva, 29 November 2006.

Opening remarks and background information for the Sixth Review Conference
:
 

"I have raised the idea of a forum that would bring together the various stakeholders - industry, science, public health, governments, and the public writ at large - in an effort to ensure that biotechnology's advances continue to be used for the benefit of humanity while the risks are managed. ….

Furthermore, building public health capacities can strengthen safeguards against bioterrorism. And being better prepared to deal with terrorism can mean better public health systems overall. Similarly, the availability of training and technology is crucial to improving laboratory safety and security, and making labs safe and secure encourages cooperation and creates opportunities for development. " 1
